Recognise this view, and this photo is tagged as Bloomsbury St / Great Lister St - Turks Head. After all that all I had to do was open a book.

Pudding I,m not supprised you don,t remember St James I don,t remember it and I only lived round the corner it got bombed out. The houses to the right of the church are in St James St as Phil said the house nearest to the church could be on the corner of Chicerly St.The houses to the left of the church would be in Willis St

Phil thanks for the info on the Trams up Gt Lister St I asked the question because the photo of the Turks Head that Pudding posted showed Tram lines turning at a funny angle for me and appeared to turn towards Gt Lister St also your photo of the Library also showed overhead Tram cables.I know at one time the Trams travelled up Bloomsbury St to the Junction so at some point the routes must have changed to take them up Gt Francis St. Dek

Hi Pudding,

I believe that the building to the left of your photo is the Bloomsbury Mission Hall near the junction of Fowler St and the photo is taken looking down toward Saltley Rd. The pub the "Plough & Harrow" is not named in any of the Kelly's directories but it does place a beer retailer at the corner of Taylor St where I believe the pub in the photo is.

This photo from the excellent site Birmingham Lives shows a photo of the Bloomsbury Mission from the other direction.

Hi Phil,
thank you for putting me on the spot so to speak, as I was hopping it was further down towards Saltley rd as to try and spot the brewers arms pub? (was known locally as the pretty ladies) I believe

Hi Pudding  -  My father-in-law used to use the Pretty Ladies as his local. It was so called after one of the managers had two daughters who were very challenged in the looks department.

Hi pudding,

The Brewer Tavern was on the corner of Cranbury St and Bloomsbury St.

Hi Pudding  -  Coming down Bloomsbury St. from the Turk's Head,it was on the far corner of the first road on the left,Salisbury St. I believe, just before the Police Station on your right.
