Phil,
I can,t recall a large Georgian house,if my memory serves me right the front of the house came as far forward as the pavement to the road way.

Gee Gee

This is the block of houses that ran up from junction of Vauxhall Rd to Willis St that the Ashted Cinema was on the corner of.

As a young boy that lived about 100yds from the dairy the hoses played a big part of my youth. We used to go down Viaduct St to the stables and knew all the stable men some were quite friendly and would let you in and allow you to give them a feed others would just tell you to clear off.The horses were very clever they knew the round as good as the milkman knowing where to stop and when to go the milkman could walk up the street and the horse would follow. In the afternoon we knew all the carts were going back to the dairy they had a step at the back we would jump on  hopping for a lift back home after a bit we would start to lark about and the driver would twig we were there and he would step off, the cart kept going and he would be standing there ready to give us a thick ear we would scatter if you were lucky you got away scot free. This never put you off 5 minutes later another one would come along. Happy Days. Dek

GG, it's big enough. Not everyone is from a Catholic family like me and you. Did you say you were one of twelve?

No but when the Council compulsory purchased these houses, if the owners moved out straight away because they didn't like the idea of paying rent for their own property. The Council usually moved large families into these properties temporarily.

When you talk to a number of members on the Forum it would  seem that we all share a simular background. And it is the fact that we survived such a indigent existence,we want to share it with all. O0

My only memories of Vauxhall was going to visit my uncle in a back to back house in Spooner Street in the late 40's, my mother would send my father up the entry first to see if the neighbours Alsatian dog was out, uncle fetched the dog into his house to show mom he was friendly but I was frightened of Alsatians for years
