I think you are right on all counts, the Melvina Rd flats and The Lamp Tavern Vauxhall rd.

On Carl Chinn's site Birmingham Lives the date is claimed as 1959, but like you I think it is 1950. To be quite honest I have no memory of it or the sweet shop next door and in 1959 and earlier I played in the black patch park next door on a regular basis. I'm certain I would have remembered a sweet shop local.

Phil the Lamp Tavern and the Shop were between Northumberland St  and Chickerly St opposite the Dairy I don,t know if it was there in 1959 but it was there in 1956 as me and my scally brothers helped them with the demolishing by removing all the lead pipping I would have been 13 at the time.Dek

I think you are getting mixed up with the Globe. The Lamp Tavern was at 23-25 Vauxhall Rd on the same side as the Co op Dairy. It was quite close to St James Place. It was flanked on either side by two shops owned by a Miss Susan Robinson, she obviously sold out the one and kept the confectioners.

In the 1950's Kelly's there is no mention of the Lamp Tavern, although there is mention of Miss Robinson Confectioner and Birchfield Upholstery. This to my mind confirms the date of the photo.

Phil, Dek, there is one thing that is puzzling me with the photo of the lamp tavern, is the two old road signs on the striped polls one looks like the old red triangle warning possably a T junction ahead on the left hand side of the picture and the one on the right hand side shows the direction to other districts however could this sign have been turn by accident at some time or is it facing a junction? at the back of the photographer

Pudding the junction that is just out of shot would be Lawley St although I can,t make out all the names on the sign post to the left is Small Heath---Moseley and to the right Aston----Perry Barr so I would think the sign post is just past the park but before Lawford St there is now a garage there. The warning sign would have been for the junction ahead at Lawley St - Curzon St.

The direction sign looks as it has been turned right angles to what it should be. Left would be Small Heath etc down the hill at Lawley St and right Aston etc up the hill at Lawley St.

Hi ronaldjoseph.

I'm afraid peter brummy no longer posts to this forum. If the family you mention called Cusak had a daughter called Carol then I dated her for a very short while in the early 60's.

Have a look at these 2 photos the Vauvhall Rd stretch is between Barrack St and Chicheley St(the wall of the Globe Is just on the edge) I noticed a couple of old shop fronts (these were never open in my day that I can remember) I wonder if the other photo is one of them they look very similar
