I've always took "suff" as meaning chimney as in "It's gone up the suff",  being "it's gone up the chimney"  I've often heard "something has gone up the suff", but I have never heard the expression "going down the suff".

"Miskins" were the places that the rubbish was dumped until the refuse collectors arrived to take it away before we had bins. They were usually holes in the ground or lean-to sheds. Percy Shurmer as a Birmingham Councillor campaigned for the removal of the Miskins and was often arrested for demolishing them. Naturally after he won his campaign and residents were issued with bins these became known by the name Miskin.

I need your expert help!


I am going to build a little wooden shed to hold the wheelie bins.  The roof will have roof felt.  Now here's the problem,  I'm sure we had a local word for roof felt,  I said to Mrs. Woen, isn't there a local word for roof felt,  she said there is,  but,  the barmy thing is neither of us can remember it.  I've gone through loads of pages on Google and I can't find the word anywhere.  Help, ideas please!
