Hay Mills from 1970
« on: July 15, 2013, 05:24:55 PM »
Hi All,

I grew up in Hay Mills on King's Road from 1976 until mid 2000's and wondered if anyone has any photo's of the area from the 70's onwards, more specifically between 1970 until 1985 which I think was prior to the Coventry road widening.

Photo's from between those dates of the shops would be great and I think there was a pub called the Hay Mills Tavern too.

Also, if anyone grew up in the area around that same period it would be great to hear from you.  I went to Redhill School and can remember Mr Dodd the head teacher, I also think there was a Mr Badger who my sister had and I think my first teacher in infants was Mrs White around 1980/81.

Thanks!

Hey phil. I lived on Redhill road between 1978 -1997. I went to the school when Mr Dodds was there (just about!). My siblings had Mr Caruthers and Mr Little as teachers too. I remember the old Cov Road, the cafe, Roger the greengrocer, the olde worlde chemist too! Mu sis went to Bierton too!

I lived in Kings Road from 1945 to 1964. when we moved for the widening of the A45.On one corner was the Congregational Church, where I attended Sunday School. On the opposite corner was the outdoor next to that was Woods Furniture shop, which had a public telephone in the front porch. Between Coventry Road and Speedwell Road was the Rowtrix Factory, where all the local children celebrated the Coronation at a big party. Further up was Greenhills' greengrocers then Tuby's café. On the corner of Kings Road was Edwards the Grocers. Some of us used to roller skate down the hill and hoped to stop before rolling into Speedwell Road. Does this bring back memories for anyone else?
