Looking For Info On Brums Past Please Help

Hi there.

Im looking for some info on my grandmother who died i believe in 1949 in Bromsgrove. Heres my story. Hoping someone can help.

My grandparents were married in 1938 in Warwickshire,  does anyone know how to pinpoint the actual location as all I can find is Warwickshire,  Birmingham on records online.

Anyway my dad was born 1942 at 44 Lordswood Road, im led to believe this to be a maternity hospital, but why would his mother have been sent there to have her son? Any photos appreciated of the hospital

My grandmother died when my dad was just 6yrs old in 1949 in bromsgrove, she had tuberculosis. Im thinking she may of died in Blackwel Sanatorium, Bromsgrove. Has anyone any info on where I can find more on this place such as conditions of the patients as I found it was specialise in TB admissions.

After my dads mother died my dad was put into care and one place was Erdington Cottage Homes. Do any members know of this place also.

All these questions unanswered and my dad is now nearly 71.
If anyone can enlighten me on where I can go or who I can contact to research about times back then please contact me

Welcome to you, I'm not into genealogy so I can't help you with your family enquiries as the Maternity Home in Lordswood Road goes there could have been many reasons why your grandmother would have been sent there to have your father the first one that comes to mind is complications with the birth.
 
As for Erdington Cottage Homes they were a well known and used establishment in Birmingham. If you click here you will be taken to an article about them.
 
Harborne maternity home has been replaced now by a church, but I'll have a search about and see if I can come up with any photos. In the meantime I have no doubt that someone loke Mike will come up with some help with your family records.

I thought 44 Lordswood road was just called Lordswood Maternity Hospital, not Harborne?

Any help and info very much appreciated regarding my thread. Its just something I'd like to find out as my dad really has no recollection of his times in Birmingham having had a tough start and being passed to a number of childrens homes. Hopefully someone out there can help me find all the answers

I think Birmingham was within the Warwickshire County in the period around 1940's, I may be wrong on that. You should be able to trace more through Birmingham Registry Office, which is probably the place the marriage would have been registered, and is probably why the reference is Warwickshire, Birmingham

Blackwell Sanatorium:
You can find some information on this Sanatorium if you do an internet search on the name. I found some good info on genesruinited.

I'm looking into getting a death certificate although as I know very little on my grandparents I'm not getting my hopes up on it being the correct one but from info I have tried to find its worth a shot.

My grandparents were married in 1938 as I checked and only found 1 match with my grans maiden name and first name and grandfather's full name. I'm not sure whether it is worth me trying to get a copy of this sent out.
So difficult as all I have to go on is my father's birth certificate and what he told me from what he found out age 14 from his houseparents in sunderton road.

Would Birmingham registry office able to provide me copies of certificates or to view it?

Received the death certificate I believe is of my nans unfortunately it has no d.o.b as its dated 1949.

anyway it states she died of tuberculosis at Romsley Sanatorium, Romsley,  does anyone have any further info on this place from the 1940s?

also states she was living prior to hospitalisation at 56 Warren Road, BIRMINGHAM. 8. U.D...I have searched for the address but have found a number of streets with the same address.

finally it states my grandfathers occupation as Omnibus Driver. Any ideas thoughts on this? Was he working for Midland Red at the time?

I just typed 44 Lordswood into google, there's a history of it from early 1900's. It did indeed become a Maternity Hosp. and is now a Medical Practice. The house number is now 54.

This is a photo of 56 Warren Rd, Washwood Heath Birmingham 8.  Though I doubt very much it is the same 56 that your grandmother lived in as the houses in this block are different build to the rest  of the street. It's very likely that the original house was bombed out during the war and this is in fact a rebuild.
 
Its odds on that your grandfather worked for Birmingham City Transport Buses or perhaps even Trams. There is more chance of that than it being Midland Red, though don't discount the idea entirely.

what makes it likely about my grandfathers role as an omnibus driver. Is there anyway of finding some record's?

next step in my search is to find a marriage certificate and birth for both.

I thought there would be more chance that your granddad worked for Birmingham City Transport as he only lived a hop skip and a jump away from the local depot.
 
As for Romsley Hospital it was out Halesowen way and set in the countryside. It's closed now but I'm not sure if the hospital is still there.
