I just happened to come across this thread as I was casually looking around. Now, am I right, was it Ansells brewery in Aston somewhere near the cross? I suppose it might still be there.

It must have been gone for at least 30 years or maybe more.

It was always reckoned that there was underground water there and that was the reason for the flavour of the beer. After all wasn't the advert Ansells the better beer?

Yes Ansells Brewery did use it's own springwater, but there was nothing unusual in that many breweries in fact used underground springs.

Hi Phil your right the brewery was closed about 30 years ago. and did use water
from a underground spring that flowed under Aston road that's why it tasted so good
It was a shame to lose another good industry. The amount of big companies we have
lost in Birmingham over the years is a great loss we were the best in the world
Cheers

According to what I found the brewery closed in 1981, and coincidently the Ansell's family started the brewery in 1881. Ansells became Allied Breweries in 1961 when they merged with Tetley Walker, Ind Coope & Alssopp. Then after a series of strikes and industrial action the brewery closed and brewing was moved elsewhere.

For a time in 1940 I went to Aston Grammar School and I can still remember the odour of Ansells Brewery and HP Sauce. Those were the days, or were they?

Roy

you are probably recalling The Golden Cross which stands at the junction of Rocky Lane and Lichfield Rd. In the 80's it had a name change to O'Reilly's and now although the building remains it is apartments.
