Sarah,
Just spotted this post.
I worked with your dad. Remember him so well.
How is he? Still around I hope.
Reply if you get this. I would love to pop in and see him if convenient.

ANSELLS v M&B    M&B for me.

Townie I couldn't agree with you more Brew X1 for me ,  only found one pub some years ago still selling it the "Old Horns" by Asda of the Queslett  Road , a couple of years later "The Bell" on the Birmingham Road had as a guest beer , guess what they had it on the smooth pour . Needless to say it tasted horrible , back in the late 60's a driver where I worked had to deliver to Ansells , he asked if there was any samples he was told to take two bottles out of a crate hidden from view. He didn't drink so he gave them to me it was mild , it certainly didn't taste like the mild out of the taps in the pub, certain employees were given beer tokens to exchange for beer in Ansells pubs

The only Thelma I ever knew was Thelma Barlow, you know, her off Coronation Street! I started my drinking career on Ansells mild in the Sheldon on Cranes Park Road, progressed to Bruno and Mild at the Wheatsheaf on Coventry Road and then refined my taste and discovered Ansells bitter and have been a bitter drinker ever since. In my teens I used to frequent the Brum Kavern Club in Wordsworth Road and there they served Ansells King Pin mild, surely the foulest brew ever devised by man if it was a man!

JamesM How can you say that I had occasion to have a couple of pints of  Kingpin in Rex Williams casino in the Piccadily Arcade in the 60's it was nectar

Generally I didn’t like Ansells, our local had deliveries in a tanker and kept in glass lined tanks it was flat as a pancake when it came over the bar. Yet the best beer I ever had was Ansells at the Plant Inn, Chasetown . The landlord would have trays of part filled glasses on the bar with great heads on them he would top them up as required, wonderful. I heard that it is the water that gives beer its character, and it is the water that makes Burton on Trent a brewing town. On a visit to Cape Hill Brewery the guide said that when there was a strike the management would have to keep brewing small quantities of beer to retain the yeast and the beer’s characteristics.
The original Ansells bittermen were several tough guys who would push their way up to the bar; some people thought it was glorifying thuggish behaviour, perhaps that is why the advert seems to have disappeared. The one with a large scar on his cheek lived round the corner from us.

Hello Ironside.
Ansells used to pull water from a bore hole in Saltley Gasworks.
Best wishes
Gerald.

With traditional ales at the pump head there is a nosol and you adjusted it to give a nice head on the top. But if you are a sloppy landlord all tipe of thing will and can not be right.

Hello Fred and Ironside.
Gas Works water was the main source of water for brewing.
Did you like Christmas Ale. Lovely drink. I remember it well.
Gerald.

I am given to understand that when Ansells brewery was first built in 1858 at Aston Cross it was built on the site of several artesian wells and when Ansells Brewery changed to a limited company in 1889 the share prospectus stated "There is an excellent supply of water obtained from an artesian well of great depth, and a second artesian well is nearly completed which will provide sufficient water to make the Brewery independent of any outside supply". I cannot see why a further bore hole would be required at Saltley a couple of miles at least from the Aston Cross Brewery?

Phil died in 2020. RIP.

I wasn't sure if Gerald was having me on; you can't believe everything you read, but then you can't disbelieve everything you read.  :-\
