In the 50’s I went, with a mate, to see a Deltic at Lichfield Trent Valley, it was undergoing tests by English Electric. As I recall it had a glass roof and several white collar men with drawing boards could be seen in there. This may have been a dyno car pulled by the actual locomotive, time plays tricks with the memory, but I thought it was the actual loco. Whenever I mention this no one believes me. I happened to bump into the lad I was with, but he said he couldn’t remember. Did anyone see this? Wolverhampton Low Level is now a venue for functions. My father said he used to set his watch to the Pines Express in the 1920/30’s. I used to see it regularly, occasionally it would be pulled by a Brit: Britannia, John Bunyan, Oliver Cromwell, but mostly it was Samson, worked to death and filthy, all white water stains. The fireman would be shovelling furiously, how they kept it up amazes me.
