An old style pub in the city centre my mate and I used early on Saturday nights in the early sixties was the Old Contemptibles on Constitution Hill. All small rooms then, but I imagine is more up to date now.

Boz just to let you know that the Old Contemptibles is on the corner of Edmund Street and Livery Street. O0

The Old Contemptables, the corner of Edmund Street & Livery Street,

Thanks for the image Phil. Brought back some memories of Saturday nights when we returned from running for Lozells Harriers in the afternoon and calling in at various pubs in town before going back to the Old Nelson in Great Lister Street which my sister and her husband managed.

The Contemptables was always the first port of call, although my memory's obviously going, I thought it was on the corner of Edmund Street and Constitution Hill across from the side of Snow Hill Station, but I see it's Livery Street.

The Old Contemptables, the corner of Edmund Street & Livery Street,
That was the pub we'd go to in lunch breaks when I worked on Colmore Row!

It was the Old Royal around the corner for me when I was a boy accountant working in Cornwall Street in the 70s  :)  Pleased to see it's still there.

Roy

The original Old Royal Hotel was on the corner of Temple Row and Bradford Passage but was demolished in the early 60's to make way for the new Rackhams department store, The Old Royal moved to the Red Lion on the corner of Church Street and Cornwall Street and renamed it The Old Royal.

Two photos attached the original Old Royal on Temple Row, and the new one on Church Street

Thanks for that information and the pics Phil. The entrance and architecture of the original and new Old Royals are remarkably similar. Quite possibly the same architect?

David - a small firm, name of Ernest T Kerr & Co. Dusty old ledgers, proper double-entry bookkeeping and fetch the box of candles and carry on when there was a power cut  :)
