Sueb
I wouldn't of known you at The Exchange then as I used it earlier but If you used Pollyanna's in the early 1970s I occasionally did the door there with John and Ash. It was on a strictly when needed agreement and Eddie would give me a shout if I was needed for some shifts. There were certain occasions when we knew things were going to kick off and as I had worked for the Fewtrells for some years I would be in Pollyanna's very occasionally Rebbecca's

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Rebecca's.  Another old haunt!

I agree about the curry houses Phil, there are so many now, surely they can't all be doing well.  Mind you, I go to one on Ladypool Rd, called Lahore Karachi with the girls from one of the places I work at and it's nearly always full - and it's a big place.  There are lots of Asian families who eat there, so perhaps that's how the restaurants make their money now.

I've only just got back from the pool where I was also invited to lunch and share a couple of bottles of a decent red, so that is why I've not posted for a while apart from - I think, one over lunch on someone's lap top (mine - I take it in the car but never leave it there as I want it neither nicked or fried).  I was showing BF and 2 Spanish sites to 3 friends who are also bloggers.

Thanks for these magnificent additions Phil and you others.  A few people's pasts are starting to come out with more detail - aren't they sueb?  ;D

Now please check that this list represents what you know to be correct.   If it does not, please post the number and name to be deleted or amended, and of course (m)any additions!

From what I can make out..the pubs along the Walsall Road through Perry Barr and Great Barr north Birmingham are all still with us.. although it seems they are all now Carvers and Harvesters although I cannot see The Scott Arms going that way...or has it?

I remember when I was still living in Brum I lived right next door to The Malt Shovel and it had a great landlord Denis (forget his surname) and he was totally inconsolable when they changed it to a Carver restraunt. It totally ruined the pub as they ripped out it's character and Denis insisted that, even though the old bar had been turned into something you expect in a winebar, the regulars did not have to abide to the new dress code. Needless to say we all drifted away as the Malt Shovel was no more to us regulars >:(

ynot14,

I'm saddened to read what you said about the UNIQUE character of a pub being destroyed when they're tarted up. The prices go though the roof too I expect - it's social decimation of small groups by big bro marketing....
