Who would have thought that Birmingham would ever see these days again? I didn't see any bowls in the hands of the two old dears at the end of the clip.

Bit of an error in the film, the narrator states, the bike is fitted with a two stroke engine.  The Velocette LE had, in 1948 Mk 1 form a side valve four stroke 150cc engine, was good for 50mph and about 90 mpg.  Birmingham City Police had them and the most impressive feature was they were almost silent in operation, the bike, that is, not the Police! Produced from 1948 to 1970 when the Company went broke.  John.

One for you motorbike fans, did this bike ever take off?

http://www.britishpathe.com/video/something-new-birmingham-motorcycles-story/query/birmingham

I wonder if the closing scene shows the bike travelling north along Fox Hollies Road (towards Warwick Road)?    The buses on the right would be going in & out of Acocks Green Garage, and the bus visible through the trees on the left would be a 1A or 11 in Westley Road, heading down towards Acocks Green.    There's a Belisha beacon crossing visible behind the bike in the same place as the Zebra crossing that exists today.     The park on the left is overgrown and still hasn't had its railings replaced following their melting down for scrap during WW2.    You can see a large half-timbered building through the trees on the left, which would have stood on the south-east corner of the Fox Hollies Road/Westley Road junction; would this have been a pub back then? (the site hosts a car dealer's yard today).     If this is indeed the location in the film, the bike rider could have exited the factory in Cateswell Road and headed south to the junction with Shaftmoor Lane, turned left and chugged up the hill to Olton Boulevard and continued through it to Fox Hollies Road via Summer Road.

There is no doubt that the ride starts in Cateswell Road but I think he continues until he reaches Stratford Rd where he turns left. he then passes Colbank Rd and School Rd before the junction was straightened out and continues on to Robin Hood island. What we in fact see at the end of the clip is this view when the junction was still staggered.

Nice detective work! O0     And would you believe I know the guy who works from that half-timbered building? :o
