I remember "The Daily Planet", the Birmingham Newspaper and knew one of the reporters slightly. His name was David Steel (if you are out there David it would be good to get and e-mail - I can update you with news of David Robinson and John Kimberley). I am a singer and in the late 1960's was still at school, namely Great Barr Comprehensive. The then Head of Music, the wonderful and talented Colin Fanshawe, arranged for us to enter a Choral Competition and because we were in the last 10 in the country (they never chose an overall winner - just the last dozen - encouragement was their aim) we were photographed and put in the Daily Planet on the front page in full colour. As I was the then soloist for the group (we were doing a recording at the time), I was at the front of the group by the microphone and I well remember the yellow/brown "mod" dress I wore and my "mod" hairstyle. My mom wanted copies of the newspaper (because her daughter was in it) so we went to the local newsagents to get copies. This was fine until the male friend I was with turned me towards him, other staff members and customers having recognised I was the person on the front paper, and said jokingly and in a loud voice, "and don't forget today no shoplifting).....ah the fickleness of so called fame !!!

Hi all.

My dad was in the Royal Signals and whilst in Bahrain, in the Persian gulf, he had a photo taken holding the newspaper with his fellow comrades as he is a born and bred Brummie.

Does anyone remember this paper?

Id like to find a copy of the newspaper to which the photo was submitted,  around the early 60s.

Does anyone know where I can find further info and if there is an archive for the paper?

I have attached the photo my dad is on the right.

Thanks in advance, Kerry

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if there was any success with this.

At the weekend my dad gave me some of his old photos that had got damaged & he was wondering whether I could do anything with them.  I can do a few things to clean them up with a photograph program I have, but 2 of the photos are from newspapers.  They are original prints, and I can only assume they were given out at the time of the newspaper articles - one in fact could be the same Bahrain campaign as is mentioned in the earlier posts.

The photos are stamped on the back with the name of the paper (one is Birmingham Planet & the other Birmingham Post) both are dated and have serial numbers, which I assume is the photo's catalogue numbers.

Does anyone know how I would go about trying to get new copies of these.

I was searching Birmingham Planet and found all these wonderful people from my past, such great memories of amazing people launching a unique newspaper. It was so special, Woodrow with his cigar in clouds of smoke bellowing orders to us all, Lady Morea with her yapping dogs and poor Mike Guy and myself trying to be normal but wondering is this for real. It was a fantastic time, so many tales to tell you would think it stranger than fiction but we all were very proud to be part of the team that launched The Birmingham Planet.  Robert Nevett

My aunty May Taylor featured in The Planet when she had ground-breaking brain surgery but I can't recall the year. Would love to track down images of this paper.

I have managed to clean the picture up myself very well, but there's part missing (torn off) would be nice to get a re-print.

Hi, I'm the David Steele who used to work at the Birmingham Planet.  I mentioned this to my wife and she found this site. I only worked there for a short while, maybe a year at most. I had a column called Ramsay Steele's Show Page where I covered films and music and such.  My heart was never in newspaper writing.  I left the Planet as soon as I realized I could go to university despite having left school (Handsworth Grammar) at 17.  I went to Fircroft College for a year and then to Hull University, where I got a BA in sociology and much later a PhD.  In the 1960s I was a socialist but later changed my views and became a libertarian.  You can see my books on Amazon, under the name David Ramsay Steele.  The latest is The Mystery of Fascism. I think I remember Gillian but some of the other names are a mystery to me, though I knew a lot of people at the time I have only dim memories of.  I have been living in the US since 1980 and currently live in Chicago. I now run a publishing company, Carus Books. I have four children who are all classical musicians.  The eldest, Emma, is concertmaster with the Danish Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.  I don't think the Planet was ever a daily--that would be Clark Kent's paper. I remember Mike Guy as Editor of the Planet. He was a very good editor and manager, as I recall. He probably remembers me as a pretty unsatisfactory employee. I very well remember John Gavin Hall, who I think used to work at the Planet, but then moved to the Sunday Mercury.  I sometimes wonder what became of him; he was capable and intelligent, and a good writer.
