I well remember Hamstead Village as I lived in Coleraine Road ( which is off Rocky Lane ) Our house backed onto what is now the Kingsdown Avenue estate. It was a fantastic area to play in as kid prior to the housing being built. I remember the cable car network that took away the waste from the colliery and deposited it at the rear of our house. I also remember playing in the old brick works as well - a very dangerous thing to do - certainly would not be allowed these days !

Hi 2112

Welcome to the forum, I'm afraid I can't reminisce with you about Hamstead as I never really got that way much. Other than excavating for a new water service at some Church off Hamstead Rd and a few occasional visits to Kings that was my total experience of Hamstead. Oh I did go out with a girl from that way at one time.

Hi 2112 and welcome. I was born and brought up in Rocky Lane. I knew Coleraine Road of course and all the others around the area. Have to agree with you, it was a great area to grow up in. Its a shame that the kids of today will never experience that kind of upbringing and fun. Which primary school did you go to? I went to Dorrington Road Primary from 1945 until 1951, then on to Birchfield Sec Modern until 1955.

Enjoy the Forum, they're a great bunch of members. Between us all we know everything!!!
I am not young enough to know everything

Hi Folks, Newbie here,

Just reading the stuff Don has posted, well I am a good friend of himself and can vouch for all the info posted here especially the info
from Langstraat and jasper14.

I too lived in Spouthouse lane and all the posts regarding Blue bell woods (wonderfull days) the Geordie estate, Gorse farm school with miss lunn, miss
Horabin, miss Wallett and Miss Sneden the Holy one LOL...

The memories are a good mix from the ( cut ) Spouthouse lane aqueduct to
Old walsall rd aqueduct  right through to the high bridges at Green lane and
Newton rd.

What memories of the Hamstead brickworks where we could go and explore the disused works, as stated before would not be allowed now.

What fun was had down Big Jim's woods accessed from opposite Hamstead
station again wonderful days.

My folks still live in Spouthouse lane and the house backed on to the (Rec),
which as stated, was visited by the Fairground every year and if memory
serve's could have been twice a year.

The Miners gala was held every year which surely was a great day had by all.

The sad thing is the Miners wash and shower rooms that  were opposite the pit were converted into the Golden throstle club, then the Kings nightclub and finally demolished, and now built on for housing.

The Miners club thankfully is still there, my father being one of a half dozen
remaining miners left still use's the club.
The Bowling green ajacent to the club is still used, but the Tennis courts &
Football field have all gone have being sold to raise money for upkeep of
the Miners club. Consequently the land has now house's built in place.

There is a small amount of the ( Rec ) left so the memories linger.

                                                   Best regards  Mack.....

Hi Donp777

Both my Son and Daughter went to Dartmouth Comp, my Daughter was
in Churchill House, she was there in 69-70 then we came here to NZ. She is now a Deputy Principal at a School here. Both of them loathed the place,to crowded and noisey all the time.We could hear all the buses and the noise
at lunchtime from our house.............On the Birmingham Rd.

Hi Jasper14,

Well I went to Dartmouth comp as well, Curie House was the one
I was in from 67 to 70 , Don would have been there 66 to 69  in Kennedy house if memory serves.

Regards miss Horobin, no I did not know really any of her past, so that is an
eye opener !

I do recall that every year in the winter as kids do we all made slides in the play ground on the ice.

I recall one year there; the main path from the infants school to the primary school leads down a fair gradient so a few lads decided to make the path a
slide. So what happens because of the snow etc some teachers have to walk to school and one poor unfortunate lady being miss Horobin takes this path !
I recall she slipped on the path fell over and broke her leg, the poor lady I
always remember even when she came out of plaster she had a limp and had
to walk with a stick.

My last year of school there I was taught   by Miss Horobin.

                                                Best regards  Mack......
