I don't think you have told us where you was born Dave?
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

Hi Townie, crikey thats a good question, I always took it for granted that I was born in Birmingham but never bothered to look at my birth certificate, well I checked it and found that I was born at my Nans house in Longbridge in the Parish of Cofton Hackett,10 minutes walk from the Austin motor works.

Brumdave I am certainly not a funny guy as you put it. I tell it the way things are if you are seriously thinking of coming back to Birmingham let me be the one who shows you around, now that's funny.

Hey you ever thought about an exchange

I wonder how pleased you would be to escort a Urologist around Brum, you would be OK so long as you don't drop a bus ticket or something  :D yes that was my occupation until I retired  ;) yes I still have the weired sense of humour that I inherited from my wonderful Birmingham family, many still live in Northfield and Kings Norton.

And what a massive factory it was Roy, I remember trains leaving the factory loaded with Austins and Nash Metropolitan cars for export, sad the British motor industry closed down, I remember my Mum used to work at the Aero during WW2 which was close to Cofton Park, she used to help making planes for the RAF. we lived in a nissen hut at an ex Army camp in Groveley Lane until we got a council house, I remember we used to play in a bomb crater that was in a nearby field, we also used to walk across the fields to Upper Bittell Reservoir, I also remember balling my eyes out because me Mum left me at my first day at Cofton Primary School.

hi dave

by the way dave they have built a by pass around northfield high street  and the back of the bell pub is all new housing

...and the Bell pub is long gone...

What I find really sad about the new Longbridge development is the walkway along the river Rea with the timeline of when the Austin works started & all the memorable events culminating with the demolition  :-\  Such a shame.  But I suppose you can't keep a factory going just because of nostalgia, it has to make money - or at least break even - and the Longbridge plant wasn't.  At least the area is now providing much needed housing & the shopping centre is great even though some of the units haven't been let yet.

It is interesting to read about the 'New' Longbridge shopping facility but I understand that things are not going so well my Grand Son Worked for M&S at Longbridge for a short while and I understand from him that M&S are less than satisfied with the takings of the Longbridge store and a number of people are being made redundant.

Sorry for the unexpected delay in posting,   I was not comparing Brum to any other city near or far but simply telling it as it really is in these parts,  thank you all who supported my opinions/views (you know who you are, to many to list) it beats me how ANYONE can disagree if you do not live in this area, never mind the past and the history of our once great city, ITS GONE, ITS OVER, the "good old days" are just that, IN THE PAST,   those who only visit Brum only see the nice new builds with their brightly coloured paint and fancy brickwork but what about the suburbs, unless you are a fool, anyone can see where the money is being spent, IN THE CITY CENTRE, that's all very nice for the tourists, but their spending doesn't end up in OUR pockets, but in the fat cats wallet, and what's the betting they don't even live in Brum.

I am not looking for my utopia, just somewhere to live in relative safety and yes, away from the rat race,
