As you say, Townie, cities change, not always for the better. Those of us who moved away a good while ago have the memories of Brum of yesteryear. Saturday evenings in the old Bull Ring, fire eaters, the escapologist entangled in his chains, Martineau Street, long gone, where I used to miss the last bus home by spending too much time with my fiancee, then walking four miles home around midnight without being molested. We perhaps now think of Brum with the rose-tinted spectacles of the mind. 8)

A thing that used to happen back then, when people moved out they took the carpets and bulbs with them. My first house when I got married 1968 cost £4,100 it was a new three bed with a garage in Sheldon.
Not just in the 'old days' either.  When I moved into my house in 2000 they'd taken carpets, light bulbs, kitchen lino and the internal door handles as well  ;D

::) started work in city 1963 after being brought up in Sutton. would never come back if I had chance to leave. London is worse - I go there on a regular visit. I would move to Hampshire or even Canada. RogerB

I moved to Sutton Coldfield in 1960. Left in 1966. Enjoyed being there for those six years, but going back there and seeing now, I have to say that I wouldn`t move back. So many changes for the worse.

I was born in Birmingham and lived in various area's of the city. I have now moved to Banbury and would never live in birmingham again. However, i still work in the city. But literally a train into the city centre, and straight back out!

May I ask what years you lived in Birmingham ?

I was brought up in Saltley, in the same house that all my Aunts, Uncles were brought up. I think I miss Saltley only because of family roots.
