My Wife lived in Laburnum until we married late 1970.  I also remember Ron Lees, Claribell coaches, lived off the main road that ran from Chester road to the shops.

We moved to Kingshurst in 1954 from Alma Crescent, Vauxhall Birmingham. We lived in Meriden Drive, one of the first roads to be built. The rest of the estate was either a building site or large open spaces. I can remember having to walk from the 55 bus terminus in shard end which was at Heath Way? at the time. It was a long walk for a 10yr old (I still went to school at Loxton St). The route took me into Long Meadow Crescent, right turn into Rowington Rd/Silver Birch Road, left turn into Laburnum Avenue over Overgreen Drive into Meriden Drive.

Our official postal address then was 'Kingshurst Hall Estate' and the original Hall was still there and occupied by Walter 'Wallie's farm'

Hi! The two pubs mentioned were within walking distance from our house but were not built when we first moved onto Kingshurst My dad and brother used to drink in the Timberley on the junction of Chester Rd and Hurst Lane. That was the nearest pub until the Toby Jug was built, which then became their local. The Mountford, situated at the bottom end of Overgreen Drive, was built next and the newest of the group was the Punchbowl which is on the corner of Meriden Drive and Gilson Way. We held my brother's 'Wake' there a few years back.

I personally didn't use the pubs.' much because by the time I was old enough to drink, I'd joined the WRAF and when I returned to Meriden Drive I used the Chesterfield Club, formerly Rob Roys. Does anyone remember that? It's where I met my husband. He was Jim Brown and lived in Silverbirch Road, almost opposite Ash Crescent.

A postscript to the above. My husband Jim was a drummer in a local group and played in many of the pubs during the 60's. He played in The Mountford, the Hunters Moon, the one in Shard End, the Harlequin?
