Yes, Spyro, it is possible to change the names of the post count tiers. But only on a global basis. The current tiers are:

Newbie  0 posts
Jr. Member 50 posts
Full Member 100 posts
Sr. Member 250 posts
Hero Member 500 posts

Any suggestions for alternatives?

No I think tbey are fine for now.

Once the post counts get higher with more and more members etc you may want to up the grades a bit into the thousands of posts, but obviously that wont be for a while.

Im happy with being a Jr Member very soon :)

To be honest I think the default names suck, especially calling new users "newbies".

Maybe just shifting them down one, so a new user is a Jr. Member, etc?

I know of one site that calls them army ranks. private, sargent, corporal, general, etc., which I thought was quite witty.
