Bus Names
« on: May 10, 2016, 02:54:33 PM »
Has anyone else noticed that Birmingham buses each have a name.  Its always a female name (one is called Julie) It's written on the back of the bus on the right hand side. Some names are quite ordinary and some more exotic.

First buses I saw with names were the Devon General open toppers, this would probably have been in the late fifties when my Mother, Sister and I used to go on holiday to the Waterside caravan park just outside of Paignton.

I have noticed the names.

Having looked at the bus website to find out more it does say they are names of staff & their family members.

I think there are some male named ones too now though - I'm sure I was on one the other week that was named after someone who'd died recently, but I can't remember what the name was.

I posted about this sometime last year.       The name also appears on the front nearside of the bus.       Some of the names are real humdingers that people are having to carry around with them for the whole of their lives   -   where are Social Services when you need them! ;D

I remember them, too, I think they were named after naval heroes.

Last night, I went home on a Johnsons X20 Birmingham-to-Stratford bus and its name was Romeo.

If they're called after characters you may find yourself riding on one called Bottom! ;D

I saw 'Jess'  (bus #6706) just a few minutes ago, loading up in Moor Street on the 900E service (no MP on board, though).
