Now & Then
« on: July 29, 2017, 12:47:45 PM »
The same idea as Phil's thread but without the continuity constriction.
This is one of a series I made in 2014. Most of the THEN images I have lifted from various libraries (quite possibly some from here). I hope the authors don't mind.

Hi trapooo1,

Glad to see you took my advice and didn't abandon the idea altogether. I'm sure it will be very enjoyable to those of us who  like a bit of nostalgia.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.

View of Lea Village shops on Kitts Green Road (looking towards the Glebe). It has changed also since 2014. EG The Greggs is now a party supplies shop.

Thank you. It's nice to have somewhere to display one's work. The bug bear is sizing the images. 80k is a bit restrictive and a lot of detail is lost (bearing in mind the originals were up to 5 megabytes), but it's something. ;)

The bridge over river Cole on Cole Hall Lane. The steel framed 'Bailey' bridge was dismantled in 2011 and replaced by this wonderful full width block/brick model. It was especially great as it removed the need for the traffic lights as obviously travel in only one direction was possible at this time. An advantage quickly eradicated by the council planning department with the introduction of three sets of road narrowing chicanes further down the road. Go figure.

Trap0001. That's what we used to call the White Bridge. Photo from 1914.

Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

Are you sure this is the same location? My pics are of the bridge on Cole Hall Lane. This one looks like it might the Lea Ford Road bridge (which was at some point a wooden structure).

trap0001 We have had this conversation some time ago on the Shard End thread. I took it as the Bailey Bridge but the photos show a different bridge. Page 55 of Shard End thread.

Yes I've seen that. I can confirm that the steel frame bridge is definitely the single lane "army bridge" (as we used to call it), the same bridge in my above now/then sequence and absolutely on Cole Hall Lane.

The foot bridge photo is labelled Lea Ford, a separate bridge a mile ir so down the river Cole as it passes under Lea Ford Road / Packington Avenue (which incidentally is the Avenue referenced by Jeff Lynne in his Mr Blue Sky lyrics).

I could post a pic of this bridge now. It's not changed much since I moved to the area in 1970.
