Up the Cut
« on: August 05, 2017, 07:27:33 PM »

Hello All
Did anyone ever travel on a barge in Brum, when I was at St Peter's off Broad St we once went from Gas St to Cadbury's at
Bournville and back again. I thought at the time I could get very used to this slow way of life . A different window every morning .

I remember reading about these trips, under the heading "Up the cut in a coal boat".
Talking to my (100 year-old) Mother it turns out that she remembers going on them, the boat was whitewashed for the occasion. I suspect the excursions were something to do with the Church.

and with a tad of colour  I should think horses was  the main pulling power at the time steam power had made its way on to the cuts with steam you could get 4 m.p.h and you could run from Birmingham to London none stop  by this time the narrow boats days was numbered transport by rail and roads become quicker  but in the 1970s new life was given to the cuts  pleasure boats and house boats started to take over and thanks to them the cuts got saved

You can still go on a horse drawn canal boat. In April we went for a short trip in one on the Llangollen canal     O0
