Hi Phil the photo's are great. I have looked up Joey Fox he is mainly associated with Leeds in his boxing career. Do you have any photos of the factories or schools I mentioned?

I think I should be able to fix you up with most of the photos you have mentioned, here are the Custard House & the Garrison. Please when you use these photos remember that they are only photos I have collected over the years, and while I am always careful to try not to post any photo that I know has copyright issues, I can never be 100% sure.

If these photo's are of too low a resolution for your needs owing to the uploading limits on the forum, if you send me an email address by the messaging system I will send you better copies direct.  The messaging system will not become available to you until you have made 5 forum posts.

I have just come across this thread and I had an uncle who I think was called Jack Miller who lived in Birmingham and I believe boxed in the army around 1917 0r 1918. When I remember him I believe he did some training and often acted as a second in professional boxing bouts. If I have a photo or other contacts I will post again.

My grandad James Starling (b. 1910) was a boxer in the Army (so I am told). I haven't got is military records so can't confirm this but My aunt also told me the following when I said I remembered he had big hands and funny ears! As a child James lived in Darwin Street.

...he was the Army champion of 3 continents. He told me how he started boxing, his younger brother Thomas was being bullyed at school (Grandad was 13 years at the time) so he confronted the bully and a fight started which lasted for 3 days each time they met. On the 3rd day the parish priest saw them and marched them off to the gym where he was taught to box. He was also asked to be sparring partner for Freddie Mills a world champion. "
