Help with Birmingham slang
« on: December 08, 2017, 01:42:53 AM »
Hi all,

I'm an Australian writer/script writer and am currently writing a script for a TV series where one of the main characters is an older woman from Birmingham (she's in her late 60s) who comes to Australia for an extended holiday. While she is here she meets an older Australian man (who will be played by veteran Australian actor Jack Thompson) and he is always talking to her in Australian slang. Eventually she gets sick of this, and says something along the lines of 'Well, I  can speak in my own language too, you know.' And then she hits him with a whole lot of  Brummie slang. Any suggestions? I'm looking for more than just a word or a phrase but one or two sentences. It can be about anything, it just has to be language that is pretty much unintelligible to anybody  who  isn't from Birmingham!

many thanks

Phil

That's not easy without some idea of the sentence(s) required, certain words are more obviously Brummie than others, like garidge (garage) babby (baby) gooin (going) and of course tara-a-bit (bye for now/see you later)
Might be worth putting a few sentences that are in context to see if they can be Brummiefied.
Do unto others before they do unto you.

"...then 'er come a' traipsin' in, chewin' the fat as bleedin' usual !"
(Then she walzed into the room, talking incessantly like she always does).

Going round the Wrekin - taking the long way round to get somewhere (the Wrekin's a hill in Shropshire)

Looking black over Bill's mothers - trouble coming/black clouds on the horizon

Go play up your own end - clear off

Cob - bread roll

Bostin - great or really good

"Is yower mate still knockin' that bint down the road orf ?"
"Oh ar." "Tickles me, 'e sez 'e ent but I saw 'im last night an' 'e 'ad lipstick all over 'is fizzog !"

( I say old chap, is your chum still walking out with that young lady who lives a few doors away?)
(My word yes, though he insists that he's not. Quite amusing really, I saw him last night and he had traces of lipstick on his face. The cad !).
