I went to George Dixon Infant and Junior school on City Road .... and I taught at City Road Junior School just for a year when I did my probationary year. I used to take the kids across the road to the park for Nature Study... brings back a lot of memories. My best friend lived in Summerfield Crescent. I was sad when she moved to Hereford when we were in our second year at Junior school. I always wondered what happened to her but I am still in touch with friends from primary school. Thanks, Phil for this. great thread. My mum nursed at Dudley Road Hospital, so did my aunt...

If your mom & Aunt were working there in the 70's & 80's then I probably met them as I had that many contracts at Dudley Road Hospital we worked all over it for years.

Hi Phil, Mum moved to London after Birmingham (before I was born) and then came back again. I don't know the years she worked there but her sister (My aunt) was Jennett Pembridge - she had a friend I only knew her as 'Palf'. And she lived with us while she worked there. She was petite and pretty with very dark hair. Also, my cousin, Linda Taylor, was there for a while before she went travelling all over the world. Ring any bells?

Seeing those Photos of Winson Green Road takes me back to the 1960s . We were looking to buy our first house and around that time there was a builder in Winson Green Road named Greaves. They were building some houses for 1st time buyers in Yardley for around £2300 on a first come 1st served basis. Together with a number of other couples we queued overnight in Winson Green Road it was 4pm the following day by the time it was our turn. We did not get our house and were turned away as I was not earning enough money to pay the mortgage.

Phil , Smiths Arms , I was in the Winson Green and  District darts club in the late 60's , my wifes two brothers Albert and Tony were in the team , also my sisters husband . All these gents were far better dart players than me , I was put on as anchorman why I don't know,
they all had that much confidence in me that they all went back to the Winson Green Tavern(the Don)before I played . As luck would have it my rival was having a bad night and I won , when I got back to the Don, you wouldn't believe the cheers . Talk about flavour of the month
If voting made any difference , they wouldn't let us do it.
