Well. you learn a lot, in fact if the car was/is art, then I know where there's a furtune tobe made, in fact just change the name on the board outside and call it "Art Yard"..it used tobe called a scrap yard. mind you the guy who owns the car, is clever... why take it to the scrap... sorry Art yard, and get 50 pounds for it, when you can leave it on the side of the road and call it art, the council must have paid a lot for it....[censored] idots....J2 ;D

Fred,

Without paint they look ''more natural'' - that way it can blend into the background - or have we all missed something?

I'm pleased to say that we don't have this kind of thing out here, as that car would be back on the road inside a fortnight here, and I'm not kidding at all.

Roy,

That's a real cracker - thanks.    But how sad that it is true.

Dear Birmingham Bloggers,

Perhaps I could be of some help, as some of you seem to have been misinformed.

Yes it's  a Mercedes Benz, carefully chosen because it's an S-class W140 (from the mid 90's), it's the same model of car that Princess Diana died in.  Getting hold of this particular car took a great deal of time and patience, finding this make, model and year that had been in a serious accident was, as you can imagine no small undertaking.  The car is not pristine as Tramp suggests, it was in a head-on smash and rolled down the motorway.

I can't help but wonder if anyone of the bloggers has actually been to the show?  I have written a text for the free publication that may go further to explain the reasons for the exhibition.  The car is only a small part of the show, there are some more wonderful examples of excellent art inside.  I urge you to go and have a look.

Also mention was a problem with funding, well here I can agree that it 'seems' crazy that the Arts Council and local government pour money into what looks like rubbish, or as is now being mentioned by Councilor Dawkins. "The exhibition disturbed me as within it are pictures which are heavily pornographic", but is it really that simple?  I think the Arts Council and the local authority should be warmly congratulated, as the other exhibition curator Andrew Hunt (from the IPS gallery), said: "Art is meant to be provocative. "Ballard is fixated with white, middle-class suburbs, which Bournville is. It's holding a mirror to the idea of white ghettoes and the ideology behind them."

As for the Tracey Emin 'con artist' reference, I don't think she'd like this show much at all.

Regards,

Dr. Robert Laing M.D.

Hello Dr Laing

Welcome and thankyou for your input,  as you correctly assume I doubt any of the contributers to this site have visited the exhibition.  Perhaps the main reason being most of them no longer live in Birmingham and even more they mostly live in other countries.

I also have to state that misinformed or not, myself included most would not even consider it.  The phrase being dragged by wild horses comes to mind.

You are involved, so I can understand why you say what you are saying, but I'm afraid that you will not find many converts here (you might find one). "Meant to be provocative" or not I still prefer to think of it as rubbish.

Jacqueline

You live in Bournville (or is it your mother).  Whats your opinion as a resident and ratepayer of the area.

Very thoughtful, dare one even say provocative, nonetheless scrap is rubbish.

Perhaps a sense of humour would be of value, plus a little humility - it is not correct form to:
 1. write both 'Dr''and 'M.D.' or
 2. use either when they have no relevance to the topic, or
 3. use either when the cursory glance that rise to this post indicates that no one
on the forum (note, it is not a blog) uses titles or designatory letters, or
     decorations.

With Phil, I await Jacqueline's response.

I always thought "Art", was something created with hand and mind, a painting, a poem, a sculptor, maybe I'm wrong, but myself personally to see a load of bricks piled up on a floor, ? a house wrapped in plastic/paper,? an unmade bed with used condoms and body fluids, ? doesn't  seem to me, to be art,
Wasn't there a French "Artiest", who had an exhibition in a gallery and he was taking his "work of art ", to show, he left it on the pavement while he went to close the door of is apartment. when he came down again, it was gone..... the council workers who pick up the rubbish and slung it in to the trash container.... seems that alone said a lot about his work. ?? ( sorry, modern Art.???).... maybe some people who work for the Art's, are afraid to speak their minds, because some one higher up said it was art... so it is......J2..( art lover ) :smitten:

You've just got an old fashioned, traditional appreciation of art, just like Phil and me.   To paraphrase your phrase, with apologies:

''To the world, it is but junk, but to one person junk is their world....''
........said ''An Art Junkie''.

Hope you didn't include me in the group of misinformed Doc. LOL ;)

Although the article from the Mail didn't clearly state it was to publicise the retrospective works of Ballard that was it's purpose and exactly what it did. It drew attention to his book and movie. A novel eye catching exhibit meant to capture the imagination and provoke a reaction as shown on this 'Blog'; for that it what these posts are; 'a simple Blog chasing a rainbow entitled "It's a work of art?' where was the supposition that it ever was anything other than a marketing vehicle (no pun intended)
Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and try to beat you with experience.
