How to make friends?

Hi mates,
I wonder how can one make friends through the Internet.. I tried all known to me methods (ICQ, MSN, Chat Rooms) to meet someone through this electronic medium, but unsuccessfully. In most cases I was just ignored.
 I've been living in Birmingham for almost half a year and I didn't make any friends..
I'm not a type of person which goes to pubs and socialize in this way. (maybe I should?)

So if you have any ideas connected with the topic
Or people who live in B'ham long enough could write a 'HOWTO' guide for newcomers.

ie.
List of Clubs you would recommend, a kind of Hot Spots for friendship.
or just leave your 'e-numbers and e-addresses'  so that anyone willing to enchance its social life could do it.

I'm a net geek, I stay inside all day at my computer.  If you want to talk to me, it's [email protected].  I've lived here all my life, and personally I rather like wandering around the shops and the BMAG randomly chatting to people.  Most people who work in the City Centre are bored stiff, and like talking.
