Lozells Girls School
« on: September 27, 2018, 09:48:55 PM »
Does anyone have any memories? My daily commute in the early 60s consisted of the 64 bus from Chester Rd, Erdington to Aston Cross where I changed to the Inner Circle 8, that took me to Harry Lucas School, Farm St. My route was close to Lozells Girls School (can't remember the exact bus stop) and from the upper deck I remember gazing down at a stream of green as girls left the bus and headed for school. What was the name of the road the school was on? And can anyone remember the design of the blazer badge?

peg pretty sure there was no uniform at lozells girls until at least 1968 and we were not obliged to wear one which most didnt because we knew the school would  shortly be demolished and parents said it would be a waste of money they could not afford...were you still travelling the no 8 then in 1968..there was a bus stop more or less outside the school

Hi Lyn, I travelled the route every schoolday from January 1960 to July 1965 (upto July 1960 at Farm St School and Harry Lucas September 1960 on). Details of LGS seem relatively hard to find - I've tried to find its lifespan without success (having said that, my search attention span is about 10 seconds).
Is this LGS?: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18&lat=52.5026&lon=-1.9012&layers=168&b=6 (map date 1914)
Peg.
P.S. If I remember correctly none of your masterpieces survived............ :(

Hi Lyn, quite possible I got the wrong school (my eyeballs were not on-line until about 10 o'clock in those days), can you locate LGS on the map?
Peg.
P.S. Looks like there was once a picture house on Lozells Rd, I don't remember that.

The Lozells Picture House opened in 1911 at 56 Lozells Road, it was rebuilt in 1922 with increased seating. It was bombed on 28th of July 1942 when the manager Lionel Jennings who was on fire watch was killed.
