Snow Hill Station 1960s
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:01:45 PM »
I know there is still a Snow Hill Station but for me the old girl died on 6 March 1972, shortly after it was turned into a car park. During my time at Harry Lucas School Hockley (1960-65) I commuted daily from The Lyndhurst Estate, Erdington usually using the 64 to Aston Cross and then the Inner Circle 8, returning the same way but occasionally, when I had caught train-spotting, I took a different way home from school: walked to top of Hockley Hill and got any bus to the top of Snow Hill, then I proceeded to the station and set-up camp on Platform 7 where, trying to do my homework in between train arrivals, I stayed until 7.00pm and got the 64 home in Steelhouse Lane.
Ah, Happy Days!

Snow Hill Station was GWR, New St Station was LMS - the other major difference was Snow Hill welcomed trainspotters (or anybody else for that matter as long as you purchased a 3d platform ticket) whereas New St was positively hostile towards them - if you were eyeballed by the transport police you were invited to leave the station complex pronto!

GWR - LMS bitter rivals, Ed - disinformation issued by Snow Hill Staff to maximise platform ticket sales? ::)

If anyone is interested the locomotive featured in the cartoon in my opening post is Western Huntsman, photographed August 1964 in Weton-Super-Mare.

Snow Hill Station wasn't just my favourite venue for trainspotting - it was where we also got the train for our annual family caravan holiday at Brean Down, near Weston-Super-Mare. My father wasn't very adventurous - 2 weeks in Brean year after year after year......until I was 14 and I said ENOUGH!
I know what you are thinking he was lucky to have 2 weeks holiday anywhere - true.

Couldn't agree more Ed, before I caught transpotting the train we got to Weston was usually hauled by a Hall or Manor class loco, I suppose my first holiday in Weston would have been when I was 2 (1951) and I guess steam was on the decline then, so my trainspotting period 1961-1963 was when steam was really on the verge of disappearing.
