I would have been well pleased wth a trip to Lewis's Santa's Grotto, in their Blackpool Store - that reminds me, it must have closed same time as the one in Birmingham  :-[

Christmas was a great time during my years with The 3rd Sutton Coldfield Boys' Brigade (1960-67). Late in December we were treated to a (non-uniformed) Friday night fish and chip supper in the church hall (Chester Road Baptist) followed by tea and cream cakes, we had a guest speaker and one I remember in particular was Ron Wylie of Aston Villa fame - a real gent.
Each Boxing Day there was an Officers v Boys football match, James Booth Aluminium had their sports ground in Penns Lane, Sutton Coldfield and they kindly let us use it for that match, there was always a good turn out of parents and friends to watch the match - most years it was freezing cold but we still played.

Did anybody work a part time job at Christmas to help make ends meet? - I did, once. I was living in Blackpool at the time (2005) and got a nightshift job stacking the beers, wines and spirits shelves in the run-up to Christmas, at one of the big 5 supermarkets. I worked 10pm until 7.00am rate was poor but was enhanced 12 midnight to 6.00am, had to agree to being searched if required when shift ended. :-[
