Hick Street Almshouse
« on: March 22, 2019, 09:55:26 PM »
Hi,

In 1869 the widow of James Lloyd opened an almshouse for women in Hick Street. It moved to Bournville in the 1960's. Does anyone have any old maps or photographs showing the almshouse?

Many thanks for your help

I cannot find any reference to an almshouse in Hick St in birmingham directories or in the newspaper archive. however there were almshouse constructed  by the James Llloyd trust in memory of him  in 1869 (fromcontemporary newspapers) on the south side of  Belgrave road, close to its junction with Moseley road.. These are shown in red on the map below

Mikejee thank you so much. Do you have anything else you could upload for me? The newspaper you mentioned would be really helpful.
If I've understood the map correctly is this location now the college site?

Thank you once again.

Had to reduce size of file to fit in with requirments of the site, but you can jus t read it. The originsl article is much longer, but is not very relevant to what you are enquirig. From Birmingham ?Gazette. 17.7.1908
