Looking for My Old School
« on: July 31, 2019, 06:11:55 PM »
Hi, I'm 70 now but when I was 9-10 I lived in Shard End.  My Dad was a soldier (Royal Army Pay Corps) and we moved a lot.  In 1959 we lived at an address: "The Bungalow, 3 Command Workshop REME, Hurst Lane, Shard End, Birmingham 34".  Try as I might, I cannot find a map that shows this camp.  Several years ago, visiting a nearby relative, I made a special trip to locate the place, especially my old school.  Trouble is, I don't remember its name; just where it was relative to my home. And the place had altered beyond recognition and I was totally lost. Is there anyone who has a map of the area as it was in 1959 that has enough detail to help me?

Hello Phil
The army camp was near the Bus terminus and not far from the new school. The guards were always carrying arms.
Hope this helps.
Gerald.

Hi Tarka Jay.
I think the school you are looking for would be Alderlea. I was a pupil there in the 60s and where the army barracks were, they built a housing estate were I lived. If there is anything about Shard End you want to know just ask and I will try and help.

Hello Townie
Hope you are well.
That would be the school I went for my audition to play in Rattigans Round Tables.
I had to be semi naked on top of a lady on a table. she was also semi nude.
I waited a few more years and went to Stratford with a brush and dustpan.
Take care..Gerald.

Hi Gerald  O0

I never knew they done things like that at Alderlea. I'm sure I would have been up for an audition (Rattigans Round Tables).
All the best townie.

The only school I recall up there (because my missus worked there for a while) is Timberley.
