Thanks for all this.  I have found out that my gt grandfather Walter Long lived at 14 Wenman Street (next door) and that house survived the bomb.  It happened around the 13th Dec 1940.  Any more on where the photo actually is?

Hi Lynsey,

Welcome to you, what are you not sure of "how it works"? If you are looking for someone or a memory of a location just do as you have done and if anybody can help you with your enquiry then they will.

Hi,

My mom and dad had The Wallace in the 50's they were Jack and Joan Heath. Just wondering if anyone remembers a prostitute that was nicknamed Sligo Kate?! I was always told stories of the prostitutes trying to ply their trade in the snug of the pub by my older sisters and wondered if anyone had any more information on her.

Thanks, Jan

Hi Jan

Although I knew and used the Wallace occasionally in the 60's the 50's was a bit early for my drinking days. I have to say the name Sligo Kate sounds very familiar so perhaps she was still around in the 60's though many of the working girls had odd street names and rarely used their real names unless they were appearing in court.

Welcome to the forum Jan.

hi your nan would certainly known my nannie Rainsford livet to be 102 and never had electric light while living in highgate st she still had the old gas mantles she was one of nine with only two bedrooms. alan

Hi Alan
I used to work for a Ken Rainsford at Smith's Industries, which, at the time, was on Coventry Road, Balsall Heath. As you had a Nannie Rainsford in the same area, I was wondering if you might be related to Ken and if so, whether you can tell me  anything about him? I was Karen King at that time and he was 2nd in command (before his promotion to head of division).
Many thanks
Karen

Hi Lady Muck

Welcome to the forum, just a point of clarification, but wasn't Smiths Industries on Coventry Road in the  Small Heath / Hay Mills area and not in Balsall Heath?
