OldBrowny......mind you, that was a time before I could do anything for myself, .. but when I started work..Ah, that was another matter, as far as bikes go I had a fanny barnet, later a Bonneville ( nearly killed myself on that, ) sold that but needed transport, so I bought a car ( 1933 Bedford Station ) with real wood along the sides, and the side lights where on the doors, ( wish I had it now.) learned to drive it in carpark, ( witch used to be St Martins church, before they pulled it down,) and when they did, it was the happest time of my life, ( I could sleep in on Sundays,)

John 2000  a little off topic but I met up with a fellow at Golf today name of Martin  .I jokingly said to him How are ya St Martins in the Fields and I was quite surprised when ha asked me if I was talking about the church in the Bullring. He then told me his father was the curator there. Small world  Oldbrowny

I can remember many happy times in Ward End Park in the sixties when I was a teenager. You could hire a rowing boat out or go fishing there and it was a lovely place in those days.

Hello Montego
welcome  O0

yes, I've been to that park - last time was the 80's, and it was still quite nice then...
my mom might have taken us in the 60's, as she took us to nearly every other park in B'ham :D
Let those that love us, love us. And those that don't, may God turn their hearts. And, if He cannot turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles so we may know them by their limping!- Irish blessing

Hi all   Seems that rowing boats in the parks were the in thing as Teen agers  I used to go to Handsworth park with my brothers and have a canoe out while Dad had the young one in a rowing boat when we were just little.. As a teen ager I spent a lot f time there ice skating  . Could go as fast as you liked all the time Oldbrowny

Hi Old Browny,
seems as tho the Teenagers and what they got up to is now a finished
thread, looking back I see most active members have alrady had their say
Maybe we should start on what we did in middle age, now that would tell
a tale or two eh.........

oldbrowny

I have little or no contribution to this thread, for the reason I have not got the time to record here everything that I did in my teens. Suffice to say like a lot of people around my age I am writing a book of some of my exploits up to the age of 21, after then it got boring.

Not that I think my life was anymore interesting or exiting than anybody else and nobody will ever see the book until after I am dead and gone. Its that I don't want to leave my children and grandchildren with the impression that I have always been the uninteresting stick in the mud that they know me as.

I will say that I used to really enjoy meeting up with my mate and with only a sleeping bag as luggage we would decide to go to, London, Liverpool, Newquay or some other such place for a few days. If we were going North we would get ourselves to The Chester Rd, if going South Bristol Rd or Coventry Rd. Once we got to the outskirts of Brum we would start thumbing and within a few hours we would be at our chosen destination.

After spending the day at our chosen destination surveying the local sights and  talent, we would head back home after spending the night in a field on the outskirts of the town we would start our return journey. Sometimes in the summer if we liked the place we were at we would get a summer job and stay for a few weeks. As Mary Hopkins said "Those were the days".

Although I'm very glad and proud to be a brummie, the best thing I did as a teenager was to leave it permanently when I was 15 ( after three years of being away during the school year ).   It was growing up in brum that gave me the confidence to walk out one night, and I never went back - in fact I swore properly (or improperly) for the first time that night.
