Waites Grocery Store
« on: January 01, 2019, 11:54:29 AM »
Hi, I am trying to find the family that lived at the above. All the information I have is that is was in an area called " the Gate", around the Sparkbrook area. The only name I have is Ron Waite who was the son of the owners in the 1950's and 1960's. Any help gratefully received.
Thank you

There was a Family named Waite who lived in Percy Road Sparkhill they had a son named Ron. I played football with him in the late 60s. Must admit I don't remember them having a shop.
Just another thought there was The Gate at Saltley

The only reference to the Gate I can think of in Sparkbrook is the Gate public house that was in Studley Street off Ladypool Road though I don't believe there was any shop on Studley Street after the war years, but Ladypool Road was a shopping area that was nearly all shops.

Sue,

It would help if you could tie it down to a time period, because neither Mike or myself can find any greengrocers called Waite during the 50's or 60's in the trade directories. The only Waite I have found listed during those years is a R Waite hairdresser and D Waite a surveyor. Unfortunately the shop might not have been listed in the owners name but might just have been a trading name.
