Some say Manchester. Some say Birmingham. Which is it?

Depends how you class it.

In general I would say Birmingham., but Manchester seems to be getting bigger all the time.
Theres no place like 127.0.0.1

I live near manchester and the urban sprawl is probably bigger than Birmingham but that includes towns such as Altrincham, Middleton, Stockport, Ashton, Salford and many more. City for city, Brum is bigger but a visitor travelling across greater manchester would probably think it was bigger.

last post got it right "greater manchester". the city of manchester only forms a small part of it. greater manchester is or was an administerive county and consists of ten (10) boroughs, if greater manchester is to be put as one unit then the Birmingham equivelent is West Midlands, you can,t have your cake and eat it. brummies 1  mancs 0

If you count things that way, you need to decide whether London is just "The City of London" (around a square mile right in the middle - mostly business district) or Greater London.
Anyone know how many people live in Greater Manchester?

There are around 8 million in Greater London. According to http://www.manchester2002-uk.com/whatsnew.html Greater Manchester had 2.5 million. Since that seemed static over 12 years I doubt there's much change on that figure. On the other hand, since the Metropolitain District authorities were abolished before the figures shown were taken, did Greater Manchester exist as any kind of administrative district at that time? Other districts aren't in the same postcode. Services would have been put into private hands, Nat. Govt. control, or quangos.

Who cares? What does is matter. The City is only as big as you make it. It is far more important to have a large package
