Hi Peg I worked at the GEC early Sixties Transformer B Bay ,I used to live in Finchley Road Kingstanding.
Hi queenie, I fear I am leading us off topic (I've already got one yellow card from the mods, and come close to detention on another occasion), fear not I'll steer us back on to the straight and narrow in a sec. I worked in Witton 1965-74 and made a point of going out for a walk at lunchtime - it saddened me to see the giant GEC Plant on Electric Aveue systematically dismembered like a huge animal, as I understand it at lot of work that was done there was moved to factories nearer the docks so that shipping would be easier......
back on topic.I haven't been to Kingstanding Island for some years now, the last time was a real trip down memory lane - can't remember the name of the store, it was on the island on Kingstanding Rd (I think), last time I was in there it was a large shop selling hardware and electrical stuff, in years gone by there was a fantastic toy dept upstairs (I don't think they use upstairs now)
but here's the trip down memory lane bit: last time I was there you could just about make out some of the great names in toys that I remember fondly from the 1950s painted on the outside upper story:
Bako, Meccano, Hornby, Tri-ang, they were slowly fading away as the years past....
Ah Well, that's life! If they are still visible be great if someone could take a pic and post it before they disappear.
Peg.
