Hi fellow brummies yes I remember the shops in the town centre I loved Henrys and C/A also Greys but that was a little to exspensive for me I got my first pay packet and bought myself a coat for 19/11 from Henrys I was 15 at the time I spent a lot of time in the city centre with my mates and now when I come back to Brum my memories are still there even if the shops have gone

Yes I remember the old shops in town, I used to earn £2.10s when I started work Mom had a £1.00 and I had the rest, most weeks I would buy probably a skirt or top for 19/11d then my rosedale hair lacquer (and it was lacquer) and bits and bobs, it used to go a long way then,.  There was a shop opposite C.&.A called Zelda's. mom always used to go there for coats 'costumes' etc, I remember her taking me in and looking at a coat for me and saying to the assistant 'ooh I did not want to pay that much' so she got the cost down (felt really embarrased) but don't blame her.

I realise this is a very old topic but it seems to fit my question which is - what was the name of the chemist that used to be on the corner of New Street, the Victoria square end? I was taken there once to have a wart charmed away.

Phil - from what I remember wasn't Galloways a camera shop? On reflection, the chemist's I am thinking of could have been Bellamy and Wakefield.

Yes Galloway's was mainly a camera shop, but they took up the whole end of New Street almost round to Colmore Row, hence the name Galloway's Corner.

Bellamy & Wakefield were in Easy Row which was the other side of the Town Hall.

Paulina & Maggie

The Beehive department store was one of the old school and it had a real "Are you being served, Grace Brothers" feel about it. I'm told it was where Jasper Carrot worked before he became a comedian. By the way it was in Albert Street,

Hi Phil, that photograph really jogged my memory

The little doorway by the Beehive was the entrance
to the Recruitment office of the RAF.. I seem to
remember the trams running down Albert St.

Up a double flight of stairs , into a bare boardedroom,

April 1947 I met my first officer who enrolled me
in the WAAF.......July 26th I was taken to Wilmslow
Manchester for my square bashing and introduced
into the weird and wonderful ways of being in the
Services...........
