Pudding and Phil, thanks again for the photo's of Great Lister Street, The pram shop you refer to was called Roadleys, on the right hand side of Great Lister Street, going towards town.    Pudding it was always the number 43 bus that ran from the old square , to its terminus in Cookoo Road, Nechells, before that it was the trolley bus, I remember watching the last journey of the trolley bus in Nechells Park Road, but I cant recall the date, Yes Phil, demolition spelt the end for the small shops and areas  like Great Lister Street, and all the close knit neighbours.

Hi all and fellow Necellite's
I have found the answer to the number 7 bus on the web, it says On 30 September 1940 Nechells trolleybus route 7 was replaced by a new bus route 43
before my time,I do apologise to you all who said I was wrong. :-[ as my mine is playing tricks on me (being the wrong side of fifty)

I was too well mannered to ask but when you started talking about riding on the No 7 bus I thought that you must be in your 70's at least instead of a spring chicken merely in your 50's. The photo of the No 7 bus I posted must have been one of the last on that route.

I can only remember the 43 and the 14 running down Great Lister St and the 55 & 56 running down Ashted Row & Great Francis St.

Just as a matter of interest as we seem to be discussing public transport, here a good photo of a couple of trams just turning into Great Francis St from what I suppose would be Saltley Rd. They are the no 62 and the no 8 route trams

The No 8 ran from Martinaeu St to Highfield Rd until 1925 then it was extended to Belchers lane until 1950 when it was incorporated into the 55 Bus Service.

The No 62 ran from Washwood Heath to Great Francis St from 1920 and on the return journey it was covered by the No 10 tram. In 1950 the service was incorporated into the 56 bus service.

Phil if the caption is correct the building in the background must be The Station on the corner of Goodrick St. Dek

As you say that building must be The Station on the corner of Goodrick Street as I have no reason to believe that the photo is wrong. Even though the gasworks look very close. It must be a trick of the camera making them look that close, as the trams wouldn't be going up any other street around there.

Phil
thank for the photo of the tram's turning up gt Francis st I have not seen that one before. no doubts about the lowcation, if you look closely you can see the railway bridge wall at the back of the number 62 tram on saltley rd, all this area has gone by the time I got around there on my bike as a kid accept for the bridge. Phil the reason why the gas holder's look closer on the photo is because of the focal length of the camera or the lens. well as it has snowed today I though you mite like to see a part of old Nechells under snow. bloombury st 1930 but which part? before saltley rd or after as I don't know

Nice photo, Ive not seen that one before and for a Nechells photo that is unusual for me. As for location I would say it was probably the stretch that ran down from Duddeston Mill Rd to Saltley because if I am not mistaken that looks like the outline of Loxton St school in the distance.
