I would imagine that the oblong building shown on this 1917 map is the building.

gibson, I don't have a photograph of the outside of the old hall face on, but this is a copy of a drawing that I had taken on to film then printed myself many years ago I remember Mr Griffiths the butcher, I think he was a little feller with glasses on

This is getting complicated. The hall on Phil's map seems to be called Bloomsbury Mission Hall & sunday School up to about 1964, after which it disappeared in  the sensitive replanning of Birmingham.

However, going back to no 307a. In 1890 it is listed as Nechells Hall, with the Manchester society of Oddfellows  local branch listed there also. In  In 1910 this is listed as Oddfellows Hall (Manchester unity). In 1912, 1913 and 1915 it is Nechells Picture Palace (I didn;t look in those years previously, expecting it to be there a long time). In 1921 nothing is listed there, but in 1932 there is a butcher at 307, but a billiafrd hall at 305 , so I reckon they possibly altered the entrance to the hall down a bit. This was similar till 1950, but in 1955 the billiard hall had disappeared and 305&307 were the east Birmingham Constitutional club (with butcher in front at 307). this continued there till demolition.
So from what has been said by others, I would guess that , although no 290 was officially known as th Bloomsbury Mission Hall, it was locally known as Nechells Hall

Hi everyone.
Never responded before, but just wondered if anyone remembers `The Wrexham`pub, on the corner of Rocky Lane and Long Acre.

Hi Eileen

Welcome to the forum, was the Wrexham the name locals called the pub? As I have the pub on the corner of Long Acre - Rocky Lane as the Royal Exchange.

I have to be honest that it never registered in my mind although I must have walked past this building a thousand times, is this the building that is being referred to as Nechells Hall by the corner of Fowler St?

Mike, thanks for giving us the info and break down on the building in question, a bit of a mix bag if you ask me.when I was a kid I can remember my grandmother saying ( ya uncle Bill was a doorman at the billiard hall up the green) this would be about 1930's a good twenty years or more before my time, and I thought to myself where was this hall that she was talking about, thinking it was the one on Nechells Park Road. At the time I never bothered to ask her the name of the hall he worked at. When you are a kid you don't ask questions, but in later life you regret.

Phil,The only mission hall I can remember is the one in Fowler street which I think it was attach to the building on Bloomsbury street. Carl Chinn states that this was a temporary building, but I think it was an extension added to the original building. The last time I was in Nechell's there was one next to the Foaming Tankard pub I don't know it is still there.

I think the temporary Mission hall was just around the corner from the main one in Bloomsbury St as can be seen from this photo of Fowler St another one from Birmingham Lives.

I know very little of Fowler Street except from the Stork at the end of the road and it's very bad beer.

Hi Phil
Yes you may be right about that.
My parents met each other in that pub. I was born in Long Acre in 1946, and lived there until i was 15. Lived oposite the Dispensary, which was on the corner of Thimble Mill Lane and Long Acre
each day is a blessing and I bless each day when it comes
