The only alms houses that I knew of in the area was the James Alms houses next the St Clements Church on Nechells Park Road between Stuart Street and Butlin Street, I believe they are still standing today. Though I wouldn't care to say they were the original buildings and I do know that the church has now gone.

Thanks, Phil! That's the place. On the photo of the OS map that I found the name across the site had been hand written. I wrongly thought it was James ALAN instead of ALMS. Do you know why the church was pulled down? We left Nechells in 1958. Nechells Park Road was  a lovely tree-lined road and Nechells was quite a good place with quite the feel of a village. Industry rang the death knell for the rural atmosphere of the district and the seventies put the finishing blow in. What a fate for such an ancient dwelling place.

I have no definitive answer why St Clements would be demolished other than the same reason many churches are no longer with us and that would be falling congregation numbers.

Hello Cathcart I was Born at number 47 at the start of the war, then after the raid taken back to Number 62. That  took a hit I wnt to live with my new Mom and Dad at Number 59.  I went to Loxton Street School from 1945 to 1956. I was a house captain and prefect so I was quite pleased with school life. What number did you live at. We were moved out for the house to be demolished but the council had a change of plan and rented the houses out again. What teachers do you remember.
Best wishes...Diggory

Hello Whitty
I was in th seniors from 1952 to 1956 so for some time we where at the same school. What teachers do you remember.
Any of these names ring any bells..Donald Bywater..John Dowing...Terry Bishop...Gerald White...Steve Billingham...John Wells..Teddy Bowen
Alan Rosser...David Davies...Melvn Williams... they were all prefects in 1956. Do you remember a boy getting the cane in front of the whole school for stealing a bike.
Look forward to hearing more from you.
