I am a first time poster. We moved into Nechells in 1960 from a back-to-back by the Jewellery Quarter. I was 5 at the time. I attended Cromwell Street school, the Head being Mr Taylor I think, very happy days!!
I lived in Southdown House in Rupert Street, one of the new maisonettes as they were called. A lot different from our old house, inside toilet and bathroom, underfloor heating....it seemed like paradise then!! How times have changed. I have a couple of photos of the school football and cricket teams from 1965-66 and a couple from school plays if anyone is interested. Mr Beddoe was our football teacher I think and Mr Virk our cricket teacher. Mr Virk in particular taught me the basics of cricket so well I enjoyed playing and coaching until my knees gave up when I was in my mid 50's....ah well it was good while it lasted. Great memories of those times.

Hi Colin

Welcome to the forum, you moved to Nechells about mid way between it being remodeled completely we have members on the forum that lived in Cromwell Street before it was demolished and the  new maisonettes were built on Rupert Street. It's amazing to see how it has all changed again around there since the early 60's.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.

My father was one of the Chapmans who lived in Inkerman Street. He worked at a company called Homers (toolmakers I believe). Does anyone have any pics of this company? They moved to tamworth in the late 60's

Hi Tracy,

Welcome to the forum, photos of Inkerman Street are rare and I think all the ones I have seen are on the forum already. I worked at Homers for about six months in about 1966 they did repetition work on automatic capstans. It was mostly women that worked there and I can only remember about 4 or 5 men including myself and I don't remember any names at all. Mind you I don't think there was more than 15 working there altogether.

Thanks for reply. My dad met my mom, Winifred, whilst working there.

PS Love all the pictures, great site. Have printed pictures off to show my dad (he's not computer literate unfortunately)

Phil, made a mistake in my first post, dad (Bernard Chapman) actually lived in Devon Street. He recalls a bad accident involving a young boy being injured on some railings there, and fetching coke for neighbours and being given a piece of jam and bread for it, along watching the high rise flats being built.

Hi Tracy

Bernard & Winifred sound familiar was your dad the setter for the machines? If so he would probably remember me as I worked under him and if he is the right chap he would occasionally come and knock me up if I slept in as I only lived over the road.

Dad does vaguely remember you Phil.  He also remembers a Gladys Gore having a capston go through her hand (nasty).  Hopefully pic of Winnie and Bernard attached.

Tracey

If it was the same Gladys that I remember she lived just in front of our house on Inkerman Street, but I don't remember her having any accident while I was there. Your photo didn't appear, perhaps it was oversize, try using this method
