Pudding, I started work at Verity's in 1960. I walked past the White Horse each working day coming from Malvern Hill Rd. My Father In Law to be, George Benton used to drink there.

Hi Steve

The White Horse pub brings back fond memories for me as it was my granddad's local pub 45 seconds away, granddad got free beer on bets that he could down a pint in less than 2 seconds. I never witnessed it, but one of our yard kids grandfather told me.

A few photos of Great Lister St one of the best shopping street in Nechells at one time. Even you people from the posh end of Nechells (Nechells Green) like Steve would have shopped there. Thanks to pudding for reminding me that I had not posted many photos of this well remembered area.

If anybody need any information about the photos just ask and I will try my best to answer.

Phil  thank you for putting up the photo's of Great Lister Street, as a child just after the war, I used to walk from my home in Aston Church Road every Saturday morning, and stand in a queue for ages, to buy pigs trotters and tripe for my dads dinner, at Thompsons butchers, it was a great shopping area in those days, The shop on the corner of Scholefield Street, and Great Lister Street, was Stuarts furniture store, where as a newly married couple in 1957, we purchased our first three piece suite, Another of the pictures shows Bannisters Chemist, one of the well know chemists in Birmingham in those days, I believe you could buy most of what you could need in Great Lister Street in those days, thanks again for the memories of the past.

Hi Gibson

Glad you enjoyed them here are a few more from around the time shortly before they demolished Great Lister Street. Isn't it amazing how the supermarket killed off all these well known shopping streets, but I think we are poorer for it and I don't mean just financially

Hi Phil, gibson, and all
don't know if you have seen these pic's in the sunday mercury taken by a Mr peter bent of stratford on avon, as for myself I can only remember a part of gt lister st that was from nechells park way to dartmouth st on the number 7 bus, that going to town and as the bus turn right on to gt lister st the bus used to lean over sharply to the right as it turned. my mom told me she had bought my silver cross pram from a shop in gt lister st but as for the name of the shop escapes me does anybody know the name?

Hi vauxonion
as far as I can remember it was the number 7 bus that went to the old squire in town and then back to cuckoo rd, and then some time in the early 60's they change the number to 43 and as a kid I thought 4 3=7 that's why it got to become number 43

Hello Pudding it has always been the 43 down Nechells even when the trolley bus went down there. Dek

Pudding

I thought it was the No 7 tram or the No 7 trolley bus and that it changed when they turned over to motor buses?

As for your pram shop on Great Lister St, I can't remember a shop that specialised in selling prams. Could it been one of the bike shops we are talking about because they sometimes doubled up and sold prams as well. If it's not a delicate question what year was this and are we talking about Bloomsbury St end or Dartmouth St end?

I knew I would have a photo somewhere, a number 7 trolley bus at Nechells Park rd terminus in 1940.
