I believe the one on the corner in the photo, was a grocery shop and had no connection to Wimbushes the bakers.

Hello Gibson  -  I was born about 200yds. from the Dispensary,in Longacre, and used to wait for my father to come out of The Prince after his sunday lunch tipple, sitting on the low wall surrounding the building. If my memory serves me right it was a single story building, built with blue bricks, and had large arched windows, and laid back slightly from the road, all this is circa 1948.
blane, gibson does this photo of l h newtons after being bombed, show part of the old dispensary in thimble mill lane look at the left side at the top of this photo?fingers crossed!!

Having worked at Newtons with the Maintainance I'd say you may possibly  be looking at part of the basement. ( Which is where we were the workshops were for Maint' & Plantfitters). Can't be 100% sure tho.
In later photo's, next to the  Prince you can see ground level windows which lit onto the Maint' area where I was based.

Hi Pudding, I would not like to comment, as to whether those windows were anything to do with the old dispensary, LH Newton had been rebuilt before I started there in 1953, and although I had attended the dispensary, I cannot recall the size or shape of the windows.

I seem to vaguely recall they were tall, but not sure. I've E mailed my cousin who lived a stones throw away in the 'Lane for some tears to see can she throw some light.
The amount of time I walked past there, even been inside and nothing comes to mind. I just only recall a grimy, grey, buttressed buiding.

Hi gibson,Steve

thank you both for your reply here's a google earth Ariel photo of 1945 I think it is about as close as I am going to get  to this dispensary building, in this moment in time but I'll keep looking out for a more detailed photo as I have been doing so since 1993

Have we seen this early drawing of Thimble Mill Lane? The drawing is from 1881 but I think it must be from an earlier time, well at least it looks it. I would have thought by 1881 it would have been more built up. What do you think?

Phil, do you think that drawing may be of the Thimble Mill?
As to there not being many buildings, I know there was a great building programme evolving in Brum around that time, my Gt Grandad & family moving from Oldbury to Brum (Doris Rd) to work in the brickyards, thus getting out of the coal mines. My Grandfather worked as a brickmaker after WW1, more then likely the Bordesley Green one. He was born 1893 in Brum, his older siblings in Rounds Green, Oldbury.

I think it is almost certainly Thimble Mill that the lane was named after the mill that closed in 1908. There has been a mill on site since 1532 when it was known as Brodemore Mill but by 1758 it had started making thimbles (an important item in those days) So it became known as the Thimble Mill.

I wonder if member Mikejee can come up with a map or street plan of the mill for the year of 1880's -1900's? I think there was a pub named the rolling mill some where there?
