Anne,   they have been German Shepherds here for a long time but in the old days they were Alsatians, my mother wouldn't have a dog or cat when I was a child, we only had  a Budgerigar

They were originally German Shepherds, but ,after the first world war anti german feeling in the UK mad them change the name, firdt to Alsatian wolf dog, and then just alsation (  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shepherd_Dog). More recently the name has reverted to the original

A photo of the Great Lister St - Bloomsbury St junction in the early 1950's. It looks like they are just preparing to start work on what I suppose would be High Tower.

Dek but it was on a slight hill because the whole of Great Lister St and Saltley Road ran downhill toward the Rea Valley at Saltley.

Yes Phil thinking more about it, it leveled off from the church to Dartmouth St and the went up hill to Gosta Green at the time it was built it would have been the highest point and stood out on the skyline. Dek

I'm not familiar with this church, but if it had its own graveyard then that would make sense.      Graveyards are always built on high ground for public health reasons.
There's no B/S on Planet Malc.

planetmalc,

I don't think they worried about such things as public health matters in Nechells when St Matthews was built. Anyway it's only on High ground from a distance.

A couple more aerial views of the Nechells, Vauxhall & Duddeston area. I can still pick out some of my old haunts that have not yet been eradicated.
