Hi blane

Yes I thought it might be a local name for the pub.

There was a Wrexham Brewery founded by an immigrant from the continent over 100 years back. They brewed lager. It closed only a couple of decades back.

The 1950 Kellys lists 220 &221 Gt Lister St as Thomas H James, cycle agent. 222 was Walden & Wood cooked meats, and 224 was Nelson

A better photo of the shop when it was owned by McGauleys, but you can see where the sign has recently been taken down.

Steve,
You are right about Wrexham lager, we had it in the Welsh news two weeks ago that someone has started brewing it again so look out for it  :P    O0

McGauleys That brings back memories. They also had shops on Coventry Rd not far from St Andrews but the branch  which brings back most memories was on Stratford Rd Sparkhill just below the park. Used to buy my Dinky Toys from there and I had an Hercules 'Kestrel' bike from there one Christmas.Later I bought a 'Racing Bike' from Mcgauleys a 'BSA Tour of Britain' it had 10 gears.I sold it to buy the good lady an engagement ring. Was that a good deal ?

Hi All  -  Anyone remember Bob Walters, the mens outfitters.I used to buy my gear from there and thought I was the cat's whisker, the shop was just up from McGauleys.Another shop I remember was down by the Turks Head Pub.sold cheap Italian shoes.I'd buy some black suede slip-ons for 12/-,only trouble with them was they had cardboard soles, only lasted a fortnight, but I felt a million dollars.

Phil Mike & all, while we are more or less standing in the same spot here's a photo of the Nelson pub it appears to be a little latter (year?) also a different angle of shot but what I have notice is the then new but now gone  maisonette's being built in Rupert street to the left side of the picture and on right side is the tower of St Mathew's church
