Hello

Looks like a great site and I've only read this thread.  I love old pics anyway, even though most of them on this topic don't mean much to me personally (grew up in Ward End in 80s/90s) but my Dad spent his youth here (born 1954 till he moved in 1970ish)  He grew up in Addison Road which doesn't seem to be mentioned here as most seem to be nearer Duddeston.

Originally it was the Showell family who lived at no 24. (not sure of time frame but definitely in the 1920s.  In 1947, my nan was at no 20 though having married a Davies.  I have heard this is because of bomb damage so they moved next door.

Does anyone know much about Addison Road?  It isn't on some of the older maps, but now of course is different from what I imagine to be back-to-back houses in those days.

Hi reubenpaul, there is an Addison Road in Nechells which runs from Cook Street to Long Acre, the long acre end is now blocked off.

Dek,  yeah, had a look at the Alum Rock/Saltley thread.  Interesting as I caught the 14 bus (or 55/56) back from town.  I lived at the bottom of Stechford Lane (corner near Burney Lane) so there are several photo's of places I remember, albeit later.

Pud, I see where Addison Road is (through Google).  I assume it was always residential as many of the pics here are of shops on the main roads, the nearest being Cook St and Eliot St.   My Nan went to Eliot St senior school (left in 1937 at 14).  I have a couple of photographs taken at the back of the house.  I'll have to scan them!

Pudding I don't have a clue, I think there is more possibility that it some sort of a hostel, but it obviously started life as a pub. I will ask and find out where it was if I can.

The Salvation Army Goodwill Centre was on the corner of Henry St and Coleman St in the 50's. It was obviously a pub before that (well it certainly looks like one), but I can't seem to find out the name it went by. Perhaps it was just a Beer Retailer and was never named in a directory. Maybe Mike will have a look and see what he can find out.
