Hi all today forty years ago history was made at the bottom of Nechells Place (the battle of Saltley Gate)

so I thought this photo of the great day looking up Nechells Place as you can see the Albion vaults at the top of the hill

Apparently there was a meeting in nearby Gate st today to commemorate the occasion. I was going to pop along if I wasn't busy but something came up so I didn't make it

Michael Collie, on the BBC news, described Saltley as 'a Birmingham suburb'.    And there was you thinking you'd been dragged up in the inner city!  ::)
There's no B/S on Planet Malc.

Dek

Not that I recognise the view, but I would hazard a guess at around Rupert St somewhere. Only because I think the smaller block of flats at the top are the Great Lister st - Kellet Grove blocks before they were demolished. To be honest I don't recognise the three high rise blocks at all, after my time I'm afraid.

Phil your in the right area I think its Scholefield St The direction is pointing towards Gt Lister St The block of flats in the distance is I believe where our Doctors moved to after leaving Ashted Row the 3 high rises are the ones with their entrances in Cromwell St which is the other side of the towers I lived in this road with my mate for 12 months after a fall out at home.I think Buck and Hickman were the main contractors if not they were one of the sub- contractors. I,m pretty sure as I remember the dip in the road Cromwell St was flatter.Maybe Pud will come on and give her opinion as it was her end of Nechells. Dek

Hi Dek,Phil, & all, first of all Dek do you mind if you take the (R) off her as I am a man as frank Spencer would say!!
my opinion your pic is we are looking up Scholefield St towards the doctors greenbank house and on the leftside of the pic is the remains of an old building that are about to be demolish

I think this photo is looking the opposite way from over the docs entrance?
is that the old Eagle pub in the middle of the older building the lighter one?

Pudding I do apologize for my mistaken identity error  ;) ;)  I,ll get it right next time.

So you agree with me it,s looking up towards Denby Close and the doctors surgeries.

The discussion i have been involved in are all saying it,s Cromwell St,I have stuck to my guns and would not move.I think they fail to remember that Scholefield St completely disappeared very early in the demolition and just can,t remember it.

I live there for 12 months with a friend after a dispute at home they were building those flats at the time Buck and Hickman were the main contractors. Tarroni had a yard just past the Eagle with a big mad Alsatian trying to rip the gate off. Dek
