That No 2 branch was the second No 2 Branch at 311 Coventry Rd Small Heath, confusing wasn't it?

Phil

Sure is!     #311 would put it on the site of what later became Dale Forty's, next to the Old Gate pub.     #104 would be somewhere on the site of the maisonettes on Kingston Hill (on the wrong side of the Cov to be next to Herbert Road).      Unfortunately, little is known about what occupied that site before the maisonettes were built.

You are right 104 would have been next door to the paper mill and the Coventry Rd junction with Herbert Rd would be 211 or 213. I wonder if there was a renumbering in the late 1800's that might explain the discrepancy.

Pudding,  Thanks for the great photo of The Soldiers Return, and the Co Op in Nechells Park Road, although I was never in the Soldiers Return, what lovely memories your photo's bring back to me.

Am not sure if that is what they are talking about, and not much to do with anything else on the video, but on the canals were very fast horse drawn "fly boats" which apparently had right of way, sort of bullet trains of the canals. They carried passengers & goods at a premium for fast delivery, and went between most major towns. One is being restored on the shropshire canal (http://www.saturnflyboat.org.uk/ ) and they are mentioned at http://history.powys.org.uk/school1/welshpool/flyboat.shtml

Cheers MJ & Phil. I've lived in Shropshire nigh on 30 years and never heard of the "Saturn" before. I knew nowt about the Fly Boats either so I consider myself interestingly educated. O0

My very first post, so hello all... just love this forum!!  Anyway, it's about the photo Phil posted on page 139 (reply 1526) of Vauxhall Road with the Adelaide Pub in the background and the 'conservative club' on the left... and the question is, does anyone know the club's street number?

I'm searching for 76 and 77 Vauxhall Road... and a B'ham Directory of 1868 places them one house 'up' from Adelaide Street (later Erskine Street?)... which has the Adelaide Arms on the 'down' corner.  The reason why I'm interested is that my great grandfather lived at 76, next door to my 2x great grandfather at 77 at the time of the 1871 Census.  Both Saunders, and both Brass Founders.

 Best wishes
Alan... aged 64 and living now in drizzly Devon

Alan
The numbering is slightly complicated, because between 1895 and 1896 the numbering of Vauxhall road changed from consecutive (1,2,3,4… down onw side and up the other) to odd numbers one side, even the other. So numbering after 1896 will be different to that before
The Whites 1873 directory , which is probably a bit more comprehensive than others at this time, lists 76 as Benjamin Saunders, manager, and 77 as Henry Suanders, brassfounder. The 1872 PO directory just lists Henry Saunders at 77. a map showing the buildings in c 1886-8 shows 76,77 in red, with Vauxhall works (brassworks) at 87 and Adelaide arms at 72 at bottom

i am new to this and hardly know Brum anymore as i moved away in 1989, so hoping that you geniuses can help.
