Hi Foster

If we are talking about the Duddeston Hall Inn on the corner of Somerset St and Cato St then yes it was a cider house or so I am told. Though I never used the place myself, I'm sure a lot of the tales spoken about the place were urban myths.

I used to pass the place regularly and nothing ever seemed to be out of the ordinary to me. I never heard anything said about the pub at that time. In fact when people started to mention on the forum I wasn't even sure where it was and if it had such a bad name I'm sure I would have.

Hi Phil.
I can assure you that there are no 'urban myths' about the old 'Monkey House'. I was in the place as a kid when they were burning the pub furniture in the fire in the back room in about 1970/71 to keep warm. Have no doubt about what took place in BAR, they cooked bleedin' sausages in the fire on a Friday night. SCRUMPY, about one shilling and sixspense then!!!

Blane,
Was the school at Loxton St called St. Annes? I used to go to St Annes and remember going for dinner in the annex next door, actually leaving the school playground. We used to have hymn practise on Friday mornings with Mr. Brandreth.  I was there as an infant in 1962 ish. I have posted a picture of the school badge from my Brothers cap.

Hello Lumpy  -  The name of the school was Loxton Street County Modern for Boys, situated in Loxton St., Saint Anne's was in Devon Street, approximately half a mile away.Loxton St. was for boys between 11 years and 15 years of age from  St. Anne's,Windsor St.,Bishop Ryder,St. Mathew's,Loxton St. and Bloomsbury St. Junior Schools.

Thanks Blane,
I thought it was Devon St. It's just that I don't recognise the pics I've seen and I have a vivid memory in my head of the school.

This is a mid 50's photo of Loxton St school, a school that I never went to as I went to St Vincents, but at the time this photo was taken I used to go to a club there in the evenings.

Hi Phil, and all

got these two picture's from last sunday's mercury, the subject was about a book called old Birmingham shop's as you can see they don't give the location of there where abouts?. the only clue is the name of the proprietor of the business.can anyone work out the hovis bakery on gt Lister st as it looks like it is on a corner or next to a courtyard or terrace, the angle of the shop front on the left side of the picture veers off to the left.as for the butchers in saltley we only have the name to work with.

Edward Davis was at 141 Gt Lister St (corner oliver st) from between 1900 & 1903 till about 1925, but by 1927 the electoral roll only listed Amelia Davis (wife?) and by 1930 the Davis's had left. By 1932 it was a bakers
Allen Sharpe .butcher was at 200 Alum Rock road in 1900, but by 1908 had moved to 178 alum Rock Road, and also had a shop at 117 College Road
