Gibson sent me this photo of the part of Arden Rd, Saltley where I lived up till 1957. The school is just visible in the distance. Next to it you can see a wide alley which led to the lower entrance to the Adderley Park and which contained my G'Dads first scrapyard.
The house near the lamp post (No 32) with the notices on it was where I lived and the front rooms of it and No 30 were my G'Nans Cafe. Before the war My G'Parents ran it as a Grocery.
The signs on the house were Craven A cigs, later Park Drive. By the side of the door was "You may telephone from here", and "Stirrup Pump" Once use to extinguish an incendiary that missed the Wolseley Factory opposite.   The nearest phone box was all the way to the corner of Ash Rd. The Cafe in the foreground had a snooker table or maybe more, and locally we called it "The Billiard Hall". As you may have noticed by the cross on the roof it had been a Chapel. With Regars to Carl Chinn who provided the material for the article.

Sorry, Having probs with invasive ads on tiny pic. will try again

Hi Cathgard,
                          Welcome to the Forum.
It's certainly a small world, I lived in Malvern Hill Rd  abt '60 to '63. I found recently from his Army Records that Great Uncle Richard Atherley had lived in the same road after he left the army in 1920 to live with his Mum. Later he married and moved to another house in the same road.

You are quite right, The Midland Tavern  photo 30 here  was at 235 Lawley St, to be honest I don't know why I would put Dartmouth St unless it was already on the photo when I picked it up, but it's no excuse I should have checked. I even had a pint in the pub on the odd occasion in the 60's.

You could probably have seen it from Lower Dartmouth Street.

Hello fellow Brummies and Nechelites,

I am specifically referring to the post by JDS dated April 4th. He refers to his wife being happy about tracking down photos of her Grandmother Bennett who lived at 53 Mount St.

My Grandmother lived in Mount St and she lived at # 53 and her surname was Bennett! My Dad was her eldest son, William Henry and he was one of eight kids. My name is Paul Bennett.

My mother was Brenda Marie (nee Weaver). We lived in Nechells until 1965 when we were shipped out to Acocks Green as part of the slum clearance.

Our last address was 340 Bloomsbury Street which was a Baby Millinery shop right next door to the Beehive pub. My maternal grandparents (Albert Isaac and Marie Weaver) lived in Nechells Place.

I went to Cromwell Street primary school and later to Holte Grammar Commercial School in Aston.

I have wonderful memories of my Nan. Tough as nails and no nonsense and I loved her dearly.

I hope you are still keeping tabs on the forums JDS. Would love to here from what I strongly suspect is my first cousin.  O0
